Joseph Gray, Lee Troop and More to be Inducted into Colorado Running Hall of Fame

Joseph Gray, Lee Troop, Deborah Conley, Lyndon Ellefson, Alan Lind, and Peter de la Cerda will be inducted into the Colorado Running Half of Fame. The Colorado Running Hall of Fame recognizes Coloradans for remarkable achievement and influence on the sport of distance running. Each year nominees are accepted, and in January the inductee class is selected and notified. In February the class is announced. The year 2020 forced the delay of honoring the Class of 2020 in May 2020. As a result, this year we will celebrate the six 2020 honorees plus three additional members will be selected for 2021.

Rocky Mountain Arsenal Adds 8 Miles of Trails

The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge in Commerce City has added 8 miles of new hiking trails and expanded visitor activities to include bicycling on select trails. The expanded trails include a five-mile connection to the Rocky Mountain Greenway Trail. This metro-wide trail system will eventually connect Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Two Ponds, and Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuges to Rocky Mountain National Park.

Reese, Rivers Win Christmas Sweater 5K

The Christmas Sweater 5K took place at Washington Park in Denver on Sunday, December 20. The 5K was won by Cayce Reese of Louisville in 16:14. The fastest female of the day was Amy Rivers of Westminster in 18:44. Runners and walkers wore festive Christmas sweaters, holiday leggings, reindeer headbands, light-up necklaces and more on the chilly Colorado morning. In all, 356 runners and walkers completed the 3.1-mile course around the park.

Smith wins national Junior Olympic title in Kentucky

Thirteen athletes from the Colorado association competed at the USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in Paris, Kentucky. A total of 1,346 athletes from across the country competed in the championships. Historically all ten championship races have been conducted on one day but this year the meet was conducted over two days to ensure proper COVID-19 mitigation procedures could be achieved. One of these procedures included races being broken into wave starts which created an unprecedented level of suspense as athletes in each division had to wait to the final wave to learn of their placing. The course, considered challenging by most, included an uphill finish.

Rich, Luna Win Rudolph Ramble 5K at City Park

Adam Rich won the Rudolph Ramble 5k at City Park in Denver on Sunday, December 6, 2020 in a quick time of 15:27. The event was the first competition in the Run Denver Series and attracted around 450 racers. Ashley Luna took the women's crown in 18:12.

Fencing Going Up At Paint Mines Interpretive Park After Vandalism

Officials in El Paso County say vandalism has been found at Paint Mines Interpretive Park near Calhan, and they are taking steps to try to prevent more. Spray painted graffiti was found on the fragile rock walls and people have carved their initials in the painted rocks. Fencing will be going up around the overlook areas in the park, as well as at the ending and beginning of non-official trails, or “social” trails. A very high number of people have visited the park during the COVID pandemic, according to El Paso County Parks.

New Parker Incline and Trails Open Thanksgiving Day

The new Parker incline and surrounding new trails open to the public on Thanksgiving Day. The Rueter-Hess Recreation Authority (RHRA) announced that its new Incline Challenge and surrounding trails in Parker will open to the public at sunrise on Thanksgiving Day. After that, they will stay open from sunrise to sunset seven days a week.
