Northfield High School junior Abdinasir “Abdi” Hassan firmly established himself on the national high school cross-country radar on Saturday night, capturing the prestigious Doug Speck Boys Sweepstakes individual title at the 45th Annual Woodbridge Cross Country Classic.
Racing under the lights at Great Park in Irvine, Hassan dropped a spectacular time of 13:35.50 over the 3-mile course, locking in the third-fastest performance in the historic meet’s 45-year history. He only trails national standouts Owen Powell and Josiah Tostenson, who ran 13:30 in 2024. Furthermore, Hassan’s time shatters the historic meet record for the fastest junior ever, besting Leo Young’s previous class record of 13:38.1.
The race began with immediate drama as Hassan found himself momentarily boxed in during the opening 200 meters. Unfazed, the Colorado junior smoothly carved his way to the front, taking total control of the tempo. He crossed the first mile marker at a blistering 4:27 and maintained a scorching rhythm to clear the second mile at 9:01.
With about 800 meters remaining, Oregon’s Garrett Fought attempted to apply pressure, but Hassan tapped into another gear. Relishing the chance to race at sea level compared to his high-altitude training in Colorado, Hassan kept his “foot on the gas” and accelerated away from the field on the final stretch.
Hassan won comfortably ahead of a fast-charging pack. Southlake Carroll’s (TX) Kai Gutierrez clinched second place in 13:40.50, narrowly edging out Elton Martin of The Woodlands (TX), who mounted a brilliant late-race surge to finish third in 13:40.70.
Hassan’s performance marks his third premier invitational crown of the 2026 season. He previously locked down individual wins at the Cheyenne Mountain Stampede and a historic record-breaking run at the Liberty Bell Invitational.
“Running at sea level felt amazing,” Hassan noted, highlighting that the flat terrain allowed him to maintain intense efforts for a longer duration than Colorado’s grueling hills. Despite his newfound status as an individual national powerhouse, Hassan remains deeply team-focused. “Our primary goal is to win the state championship as a team, with a hopeful aim to qualify for Nike Cross Nationals (NXN) and chase a national title.”
