American distance runner Drew Hunter made history on September 19, 2026, setting a new American and NACAC area record in the road 5K at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Denmark. Hunter currently lives and trains in Boulder, Colorado.
Hunter crossed the finish line in a blistering 13:14, shaving three seconds off the previous national record of 13:17, which was held by Abdihamid Nur.
Hunter is a co-founder of the Boulder-based running group Tinman Elite.
Facing an elite international field, Hunter pushed a relentless pace to finish 11th overall in the world-class race. His record-breaking performance marks a major milestone in his career and firmly re-establishes him at the forefront of American distance running.
“The goal was to come out here, compete against the absolute best in the world, and run a aggressive race,” Hunter said following the event. “To come away with the American record is an incredible feeling and a testament to the training block leading up to this.”
With this historic mark in Copenhagen, Hunter shifts his focus to the upcoming track season, where he looks to carry this momentum onto the global stage.
