The Colfax Marathon, the Pikes Peak Marathon, the Long View Marathon, the Dust Bowl Series,… These are just a few of the marathons that are taking place this year in the Centennial State. And while hundreds, if not thousands have already signed up, most of Colorado’s elderly population is hesitant to embark on such a journey. Their reasons for this are completely understandable, as health related issues can spike in one’s golden years; but, when done with caution, taking up running in later life can actually have a host of unexpected benefits.

Get ready for your first marathon at 50
It may sound like an impossible challenge, but with proper preparation, running a marathon later in life, even if you’ve never done it before, is very possible. Taking up running in later life, however, should be done with caution and suitable help. More precisely, if you’re one of 891,000 Coloradans who lives with arthritis or other, more serious conditions, seek advice from your doctor before taking up the challenge. And once you do get the green light from your doctor, make sure you don’t do it alone. Ask a friend or a professional who’s done it before to coach you – have them help you get off to an easy start. This way, not only will you be in good hands, but two is always more fun than one.

Experience immediate health benefits
Improved blood flow, increased muscle mass, and flexibility are just a few of the many health benefits that one may experience during the first week of their marathon training. Furthermore, those with weight issues have also reported weight loss only after their first week of training. This actually shouldn’t come as a surprise, as studies have proven that approximately 394 calories are burned during a 5K run. However, besides physical improvements, one may even experience positive changes in their mental health. According to a study conducted by the American College of Sports Medicine, just a 30-minute-long run can improve one’s mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. So, needless to say, besides getting you into shape, this inexpensive activity will also alleviate any pre-existing mental issues.

Experience the sensation of success
For many, once they enter 50, life slows down. And while it’s fun to watch The Wheel Of Fortune, and see others experience success, wouldn’t it be more fun to experience it in real life? Now, it may not be the same kind of excitement and satisfaction as the ones feel when they land on a wild card, but running a marathon can be just as amazing. In other words, besides enormous long-lasting health benefits, you’ll make an unforgettable memory, fulfill a huge goal, and most importantly make a new friend or two.

So, if you get the green light from your doctor, take a chance and embark on this exciting adventure. You’ll be talking about it for years to come.
