It should come as no surprise that runners have a very strict workout regime and a diet plan they need to stick to before any major race. This not only helps them improve their form, but it also significantly boosts their chances of success.

But getting into the physical form required is not something many struggle with; it’s actually getting into the right headspace some runners find challenging. That’s why we’ve prepared a short guide on how to get into the zone and ensure you’re both physically and mentally prepared for the upcoming race.

Don’t overthink

Overthinking is probably the number one source of unnecessary stress and anxiety. So, instead of thinking about everything that could hypothetically go wrong, try to take your mind off of the race. Instead, make sure you squeeze in some entertainment before the big race. For instance, you could try to play Monopoly live for real money or watch a movie on Flixtor, instead of thinking too much about the race. That way you will put your mind at ease, which will enable you to get into the right headspace.

Get plenty of rest

Next, even though you may get the urge to squeeze in another workout before the race, this can actually be counterproductive. So, instead of pushing yourself too far, make sure you get plenty of rest. Your body will perform best if it’s well rested and rejuvenated, so don’t try to push yourself over your limits. It’s important to note that rest can come in many different shapes and forms – it doesn’t just boil down to sleeping, but sleep does play a vital role here.

Stick to the familiar

Finally, try to avoid changing things up and trying out something new right before the race. Instead, focus on the things you know and are familiar with. If you’ve bought new running shoes, for instance, but haven’t actually gotten the chance to try them out and break them in before the race – it’s a really bad idea to try and do so on the day of. Instead, stick to your trusted running shoes that served you well up until now, and check out the new ones once the race is over. That way you’ll be using the gear you know you can trust and rely on, instead of risking things potentially going astray.

If you find yourself nervous and stressed before the upcoming race, try out some of these tips. They will help you get into the right headspace, which will ultimately help you reach the desired results more easily.
