6

The Vail Recreation District invites trail runners to take on the third annual Cougar Ridge Classic 26K on Saturday, Sept. 26! This challenging point-to-point sub-ultra race takes runners up and over Vail Mountain before descending into the heart of Minturn, combining challenging terrain, spectacular views and peak fall colors for an unforgettable day on the trails.

NEW for 2026 – racers who are looking for a shorter option will enjoy the Cougar Cub 14K, which starts at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola on Vail Mountain!

Registration is available at register.vailrec.com. This race is capped at 175 participants, so sign up early to reserve your spot!

Cougar Ridge Classic 26K

The race begins at 7 a.m. in Vail Village, giving you a brief warm-up before the start of the climb on steep singletrack. In no time, you’ll be pushing toward nearly 11,000 feet above sea level. Navigate roots and rocks as you ascend, then settle into a steady rhythm along smooth singletrack en route to Eagle’s Nest. At the summit, pause to savor the moment and take in sweeping views of the Gore Range and Mount of the Holy Cross. From there, enjoy the flowy trails across Game Creek Bowl before descending Cougar Ridge singletrack all the way into downtown Minturn.

While you’re ascending nearly 3,500 feet over 16.1 miles, we’ll be busy supporting you along the way. For safety reasons, the Eagle’s Nest cut-off time will be strictly enforced. However, there will be plenty of water, snacks, and volunteers at each aid station to encourage you to refuel and keep clawing your way up the trail.
