The Spanish Peaks Half Marathon is on!

Registration for the Spanish Peaks Half Marathon is open. Run at Grandote Peaks in La Veta. The Las Animas-Huerfano County Health Department has approved the plan to host the in-person Spanish Peaks Half Marathon and 2 Mile Fun Run. Just $40 for the half marathon and $20 for the 2 mile early bird pricing!

Some changes to our normal race day experience follow:

· There will be separate start times for each distance, and the half marathon starts will be staggered so each runner starts at a different time.

· Runners will be separated by 6’ before the start.

· The half marathon will utilize a separate course (Highway 12) from the Fun Run (within the Grandote Peaks golf course).

Register for this in-person event in La Veta Saturday, October 3. Early registration prices for the half marathon end September 1.

This is a RaBa Cinco event.

Physical Distancing is the new normal in our time of covid-19 and the 2020 Spanish Peaks Half Marathon has been redesigned to minimize the risk of everyone involved. Here are just some of the arrangements we’ve made to enhance your safety:

✓ Out and back course to avoid shuttling and carpooling to the start

✓ Individualized (one minute apart) start times with adjusted electronic chip finish time – creating a physically distanced rather than a group start. You will be assigned a unique start time based on the order of registration. (e.g., 8:00, 8:01, 8:02…)

✓ 10 foot distancing passing rule which is easily achieved on the course

✓ Availability of hand sanitizer, frequent sanitizing of surfaces including porta-potties, tables, etc.

✓ Water & sports drink will be available but runners may elect to provide their own refreshments as many do for their training runs

✓ Participants are invited to offer other suggestions to accommodate their special needs. (Email us and we will consider your ideas, e.g., home made bibs)

This year’s out and back course should virtually guarantee the elusive “negative split” with a gradual outbound ascent totalling 730 feet of elevation gain and a smooth, even downhill cruise when the first half work is done. It is noteworthy that the outbound terminal point of the course is reached just BEFORE the road to Cuchara begins to climb significantly and this is arguably at the most scenic area of the famed Highway of Legends with the stone dike formations looming to the east.

The Half Marathon starts and finishes at La Veta Town Park. Runners head south on Oak Street, making a right turn at Cascade, then left on Cherry Street before going right onto CO 12, the Highway of Legends. Runners proceed along the highway to the turnaround point, 6.55 miles from the start, returning on the same route to the finish line in La Veta Town Park along Oak Street, just north of Ryus Street.

If you’re not ready for a half marathon, also available is a Fun Run option, beginning and ending in the La Veta Town Park. Get some exercise and fresh air and then join the annual Oktoberfest activities!
