ABOUT COLORADO RUNNER
Colorado Runner was founded by Derek and Jessica Griffiths in 2003. They were becoming frustrated with looking for races and results of races in Colorado, so they decided to put a magazine together to allow local runners one resource for all their running needs. Thus, Colorado Runner was born. Due to the ever changing landscape of print media, Colorado Runner’s last print edition was published on March 1st of 2019. We still maintain a comprehensive website as well as producing multiple events each year. To learn more about our events, click here.

Issue 32 (November/December 2008)

Have any of you read the book The Purple Runner by Paul Christman? In this novel, a disfigured man is always seen running through the hills outside of London. He runs at such an incredible clip that most people do not notice his face. He never runs any races, just around the hills. But, he is befriended by some others who are planning to run the London Marathon. One of them dies, and the purple runner decides to run with his number (something that most race directors frown upon). He takes off at the start of the race and passes the press truck, which decides to let him go because he is running so fast and there is no way that anyone can maintain that pace. Well, he ends up winning the race in 1:59:57.

What were you doing five years ago? You might have been gearing up for a fall marathon or you may have been complaining about the cost of gas to get to your favorite weekend 5K. At about the time that you’re collecting this magazine from your mailbox, the Olympic Track and Field Trials are taking place in Eugene, Oregon. I’m a long time track fan, but unfortunately, with the addition of an infant at my house, I’m not able to attend the Trials in person this year.

Spring is finally here! That means it is time to start thinking about which races you will be training for in the upcoming months. Several female Coloradans are gearing up for the Women’s Olympic Marathon Trials in Boston on April 20th. Nineteen women from Colorado and one from Wyoming have run the qualifying standard of 2:47 or better. We have featured one qualifier, Paige Higgins, on page 18. Paige ran an amazing 2:40:14 at last year’s Chicago Marathon, despite oppressive heat and humidity. If you’re wondering how these women got so fast, you can read about the training characteristics of Olympic Marathon Trials qualifiers.

A jubilant marathon weekend was darkened by the death of Ryan Shay during the Men’s Olympic Marathon Trials in New York’s Central Park in November. The 28-year-old runner collapsed a little over five miles into the race.

My wife has finished nine marathons, but she recently completed a marathon of a different sort. Our son, Alex, was born in late September. The nursing staff at the hospital kept telling her during labor that she should pretend she was nearing the finish of a marathon. Jessica, however, wasn't fooled.

Issue 25 (September/October 2007)

As runners, we get up early to exercise in the morning before going to work and often give up fun with friends and family to exercise in the evening. We set our sights on a goal, whether to run a fall marathon or improve our time in a 5K, and work endlessly to achieve it.

I’m happy to announce that Colorado Runner is nearly four years old.
