FAST times were had at the Mt. Sneffels Half Marathon, the Portland Track Festival, and the NACAC track championships. We’ve got those recapped, and highlights from Colorado runners competing all around the world.
Ben Payne (Colorado Springs), this year’s BolderBoulder 10k winner, won the Portland Track Festival 10000m in 28:50. Gabe Proctor (Ex-Western) was third in 29:19, Andrew Epperson (BTC) fourth in 29:26, Jeremy Drenckhahn (Colorado Springs) eighth in 31:03, and Chris Guerrero (BTC) ninth in 31:21. For the women, Brianne Nelson (Golden) was first in 32:46, Adriana Nelson second in 33:19, Brittni Hutton (Alamosa) fifth in 34:01, and Emma Keenan (BTC) eighth in 37:07.
At the North American Central American Caribbean (NACAC) championships in Costa Rica, Shalaya Kipp (Boulder) was second in the 3000m steeplechase in 10:03.
Joe Gray (Colorado Springs), Megan Kimmel (Carbondale), and Stevie Kremer (Crested Butte) all took part in Switzerland’s highly-competitive Sierre-Zinal mountain race. Gray was fourth, Kimmel second, and Kremer fourth.
Erik Skaggs (Durango) and Maria Petzold (Boulder) won the third-year Telluride Mountain Run 38-miler.
George Zack (Broomfield) won the Leadville Boom Days burro race, covering 22 mountain miles in 3:45. With wins the previous two weekends in Fairplay and Buena Vista, this win sealed the Triple Crown of Burro Racing.
Holy smokes, Ouray’s Mount Sneffels Half Marathon was fast! A $1,000 cash prize and a downhill course combined to fuel six men under 1:08. Those times are so fast they all deserve mention – Noah Chepngabit (1:04.24), Boulder’s Mario Macias (1:05.40), Colorado Springs’ Augustus Maiyo (1:05.52), Stanley Boen (1:06.26), Jordan Chipangama (1:06.32), and Kenneth Rotich (1:07.07). The women’s race was just as fast, though not as deep. Janet Bawcom came up from Flagstaff to run 1:14.53. Heather Utrata was second in 1:20.21
In the accompanying Mount Sneffels Marathon, it was Ryan Smith of Texas on top in 2:52 with Kari Van Zyl winning for the women in 3:40.
The popular, and also downhill, Georgetown to Idaho Springs Half Marathon, saw Steve Chu (Colorado Springs) win by 2.5 minutes in 1:09.41. Malia Crouse (Edgewater) was a 4-minute winner in the women’s race at 1:19.26.
323 runners took part in Denver’s Drop Your Drawers and Run 5k. Up front it was Andrew Drysdale and Niki Hemminger in 17:20 and 20:12.
Carlos Pinilla and Elizabeth Stevens were victorious at Westminster’s Holy Cow Trail Stampede 10k in 35:26 and 42:11. In the 5k, it was Christian Sapakoff and Madeline Mullen in 18:25 and 19:50.
U.S. Mountain Running Team member JP Donovan won the Run Like the Wind 10k in Allenspark, clocking 40:38 for a nearly 8-minute win. U.S. junior team member Lily Tomasula Martin won the 5k in 22:56.
