Triathlon is the never enough sport! With three sports to train for there is never enough time, never enough training, and never enough great equipment. It’s the ultimate comparison sport. She’s faster, he’s stronger, she has longer legs, he has wider shoulders, she has a better bike, he has a better wetsuit. It’s a wonder we all continue to participate at all.

Winter running in Colorado can sometimes be difficult. With the cold and snow, it can be hard to find the motivation to get out the door. Sometimes, all it takes is a trip to a scenic location to get the blood and adrenaline flowing again and help brighten the spirit of even the most uninspired runner.
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the Pikes Peak Marathon, I'm writing about the Barr Trail. This lung-burning trail travels from a parking lot in Manitou Springs, which is located just west of Colorado Springs, at 6,650 feet. Once upon a time, carbohydrates were referred to as simple or complex, sugars or starches. Today, the classification is more complicated; carbs are often ranked as quick or slow in a very complex system called the glycemic index. The glycemic index is theoretically based on how 50 grams of carbohydrates (not counting fiber) in a food will affect blood sugar levels.

The onset of winter needn't bring a seasonal halt to a runner's enthusiasm or routines. Outdoor exercise in the winter can be a pleasurable experience. The major risk posed by running in subfreezing air is frostbite and minor irritations to the respiratory tract. With some minor precautions these risks can be eliminated.

As I sit in the parking lot on top of the Grand Mesa in western Colorado, I feel a bit lightheaded. Maybe it's just the elevation - we are at 10,000 feet.
As an athlete, you are likely lean and fit. But with more than 60% of Americans being overweight or obese, you undoubtedly know someone who struggles with how to shed undesired body fat. At the American Dietetic Association’s annual convention, nutrition researchers presented alternatives to the standard “eat less and exercise more” diet advice.
Deer Creek Canyon Park had its beginnings as a campground for wandering bands of Ute and Arapahoe. The hike to the top of the last remaining fire lookout in Colorado charms with its smooth, double-track path and a canopy of pine and aspen. While this hike is not difficult - you can go with the entire family - it's a must-see. The tower's rich history captures the true spirit of Colorado.
Dear Nancy,
I am a 24-year-old grad student who runs 6 miles a day. I take many, many vitamins each day, and am wondering if this is all a big hoax. I follow what books and doctors have told me along the way and am just trying to maintain my health. The pills are not only a hassle to take but are also expensive. Do I really need all of these?
If a diet or natural supplement claimed to improve reaction time, along with faster recovery and better mental focus who wouldn’t want to follow or take it?

The Event Marketing Group (EMG) recognizes that not every event, group, charity, etc needs the full-service management that we provide. Despite our best efforts, injuries can creep into our lives from time to time. So, what do we do?
The offseason can be a challenging time for multisport athletes. Some completely fall off the training wagon, eat too much, gain weight, and even become a little depressed. At the other end of the spectrum, many triathletes fear that if they take any time off, they’ll lose their competitive edge.
Have you ever Googled core strength and running? I did and there were over one million articles! That's a little overwhelming... so I'm going to try and make it simple for you. First, I'll tell you about core strength, then where the core is and finally how to improve core strength.
How can you run your second marathon faster than your first? A common goal for many runners attempting a first marathon is to simply finish the race. Given the distance and the volume of training needed to build endurance, this goal is appropriate. Just getting to the starting line without injury is an accomplishment.
As long as you are reading this article the answer to that question is "Yes." The real question is, "Do you know what your heart rate is while you train?" Even more importantly, do you know what your heart rate should be during any given workout?

I woke up on Sunday morning in late July and finally decided it was time to hit the high country for altitude training. With most of my training partners getting ready for the Leadville Trail 100, I knew it would be easy to drag a few of them along with me. But, with all of our busy schedules, I knew I had to find something close. I chose Herman's Gulch.

Beep Beep Beep. Slap. My hand fumbles the alarm clock off. Ugh. Why is it so early? My brain slowly processes the time of 4:30 a.m. Ring Ring Ring. The phone? What the heck? Then I remember. I am meeting my buddy for a 5 a.m. run. After we'd each missed early morning runs we decided to call each other to make sure that both parties were out of bed. I pick up the phone.

Iron is an extremely important mineral for good health and performance. The most important role iron plays is as a component of the protein hemoglobin, which carries oxygen from the lungs to the body’s cells. A higher level of iron can mean a higher aerobic capacity and better performance.

Quinn’s Running Club was born, fittingly, over a boilermaker (typically a shot dropped into a beer). At the Tejon Street pub one night, word made it to co-owners Bill and Donna Sasz that it was [Ryan] Shininger’s 25th birthday. They bought the recent Florida transplant an Irish Car Bomb.

A runner that I coach actually PR'd at a 1/2 marathon after only 4-weeks of running! In the month prior, she was water running, cycling, and using an elliptical trainer as she recovered from a broken toe. Fortunately, you don't have to break your toe for cross training to work for you too!
March can be a tough time to hit the trail running. It’s the snowiest month of the year for the mountains and Front Range, and even if the snows don’t come, chances are the trails are still snowpacked and icy. There’s only one thing to do: head west to Fruita.
When looking for a uniquely Colorado trail running experience near the heart of the city, look no further than Lair o' the Bear park. Located just four miles west of Morrison, this park offers smooth trails ranging in elevation from 6,500 feet to 7,500 feet.

The car idled while I sat waiting to muster enough energy for my run in Lory State Park. I was feeling lethargic and running alone made the prospect more difficult. It had been a year since I had run the Arthur's Rock trail loop. But finally, I turned the car off, laced my shoes and stood up.

You've trained hard all spring, raced all summer, and maybe even finished your season with a fall marathon. Now you're ready for some recovery time. This is typically the time of year when athletes tend to significantly decrease their training volume and intensity, but do not think to decrease their caloric intake.

Welcome to the Mesa Monument Striders running club located in Grand Junction Colorado. The club is made up of exercise enthusiasts who endorse running as a healthy, enjoyable activity. Christmas Eve, 1999. The streets are deserted, the snow is softly falling, and the night is dark and still... a perfect time for a run.
I recently finished reading the book, How to Think Like Einstein. Its theme is that you have to break rules to solve problems and find answers to difficult questions. Einstein discovered the theory of relativity, according to the book, by breaking rules that other scientists were unable to break because their preconceived ideas got in the way.

When you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, Summit County is the perfect escape. There are dozens of breathtaking trails to choose from, but I've chosen one easy and accessible trail to tell you about. The trail begins near downtown Breckenridge and has incredible views of the ski runs and the town.
"OK everyone, we will start the time trial in intervals," announces Adam Feerst of the Denver Trail Runners.
"The slower runners will go off first and the fastest runner will go last." Unlucky for me, I happen to be the fastest runner today. Great, I get to chase everyone. But, this is Mt. Falcon, so at least I will get great views of the city if I can take my eyes off of my feet!
I first conquered Mt. Sanitas when I was training for the Pikes Peak Marathon in 2003. I had heard from a friend of a friend that it was a great hill workout and that it was quick and easy to get to.

Native Americans are known to have taken the colorful clays to produce pottery and ceremonial paint. Improving your stride can increase your speed and reduce your risk of injury. Any energy that doesn't go into moving you forward is wasted. The goal is to minimize those flaws. Here are few tips and drills you can do to make some quick improvements.

THE PROGRAM
Interval training can be an extremely potent training technique to improve your racing performances. It’s also widely avoided by recreational runners because it’s considered a sharpening technique for elite runners only.
After many long hard months of training, recovery prior to that awe-inspiring long distance race is essential. Many runners follow the recommendations of rest, lighter workouts, proper nutrition, ice, stretching and massages, but all too frequently some minor aches and pains just don’t go away.
Although exercise is one of the best ways to improve heart health, even athletes are not immune from heart disease. You have undoubtedly heard reports of marathon runners who die of heart attacks and football players who have strokes. Women, like men, need to pay attention to heart disease; it is the #1 killer of women, higher than all cancers combined.
Most triathletes and cyclists immediately grimace and think "boring" at the first suggestion of riding their bike on a stationary trainer. However, triathletes and cyclists should also understand that early base phase is the most important time of the year to build a solid aerobic and endurance base, along with improving technique.

If you are a seasoned competitor, your goal may be for a personal best or just to get the most out of yourself on race day.
Imagine what it would be like to drive your automobile without an instrument panel. You could guess your speed by looking at other vehicles, but they may be going too fast or too slow. You would not know if you were about to run out of gas, if your engine was too hot, or your oil pressure too low.
For many athletes, nutrition is the missing link. They have their training down, but their diet needs help. Here are five common problems that could be sabotaging your running and triathlon race times.
Missing link #1: Respect for the power of food
For many athletes, nutrition is the missing link. They have their training down, but their diet needs help. Here are eight common problems that could be sabotaging your running and triathlon race times.
In Part I of this article, which was published in the last issue, I discussed five common missing nutrition links that hurt athletic performance:
1) Respect for the power of food.
To be a triathlete often means that inflammation is your constant companion due to over-training. As a result, the use of anti-inflammatory drugs (Aspirin, Motrin, and Aleve) is exceptionally common. These drugs reduce inflammation by inhibiting pro-inflammatory hormones known as eicosanoids.

Timing Consortium is a finish line management and timing company. The founders of the company are Cliff Bruce and Mike & Chris Vanoni. They have years of experience in timing small to large events, including running, cross-country, bicycling, skiing, and kayaking.
Durango is a trail runner's paradise. Located in the high mountain desert in the Four Corners Region near the common corner boundary of Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona, Durango residents see the sun shine about 330 days a year. On the few days when running might be problematic, there is probably fresh snow on the trails that would also make for great snowshoeing.
Training with a power meter is a great way to take the guess work out of 'how hard' or 'how much' you're doing on the bike. Simply put, a weight lifter wouldn't do the bench press without knowing exactly how much weight is on the bar and how many sets and reps he or she is aiming to complete... or workload in a given workout.
Waldo Canyon is one of the most popular trails in the region, and for good reason. It has moderate grades, views of both city and mountains, cool dark forest, and (mostly) good running surfaces. Much of the trail faces south, making for reasonable conditions year round.
As spring bleeds into summer, Boulder’s trails become popular as ever with hikers and trail runners. Chautauqua in particular can seem swarmed, and finding parking can be a challenge before you even hit the trail. The crowds tend to stick to the front side of the Flatirons, however.
It was a cold and windy Saturday morning, which made the prospect of running a bit difficult in my current state of mind. I prefer to run when it is sunny and warm (who doesn't) so the fact that I needed to wear pants and a jacket didn't appeal to me. I had to think of a way to get myself out the door. I decided to drive down to Waterton Canyon and run the 17 mile loop.
As an endurance athlete it is likely that you have not included strength training (ST) in your training routine.
It's cold outside. It gets dark early. The track and roads are covered in snow and ice. That doesn't mean that you can't do speed work. With a little flexibility and creativity, you can get in quality speed workouts over the winter.
