Course Records Set At Garden of the Gods 10M

GOG_2009.jpgOn a perfect morning for racing, Nearly 1,600 runners braved the hills for one of the most beautiful races in Colorado - the Garden of the Gods 10M.

This year, both course records were set. In the men's race, Simon Cheprot (left), a 19-year-old Kenyon living in Aurora crushed the field by nearly a minute and shaving almost two minutes off the old course record. Cheprot's time of 50:31 is incredible considering the difficulty of the course. Finishing second was Kennett Kiptoo in 51:19. Former course record holder Ezkyas Sisay bettered his old course record (52:26) by nearly a minute, but only managed to finish third in 51:35.

For the women, Belaynesh Gebre of Ethiopia demolished the woman's field, crushing her own course record in the process. Second place runner Daniela Cirlan dipped under the old course record of 1:01:20 with her 1:01:15 clocking, but was no where near the lead as Gebre became the first female to dip under an hour, running a blistering 58:49.

The race starts and finishes in Memorial Park in Manitou Springs.
