A community is mourning after the sudden death of a high school student during a 5K cross-country meet in Broomfield Friday night. Peak to Peak High School Senior Brandon Ries, 18, collapsed while running on the course. Ries was the co-captain of the cross country team.

“He was taken to the hospital and fought hard, but sadly, he passed away with his family at his side,” the school said in a statement. “The entire community is impacted by this loss. Brandon was part of the heart and soul of our school, and represented the best of us all.”

About 200 grieving friends, schoolmates and staff gathered on the track at the school on Saturday morning to pay their respects. Grief counselors will be available at Peak to Peak Charter School on Monday to help students dealing with the death.

Brandon’s family released this statement. “Our family is deeply grieved by the loss of our son, Brandon. We loved Brandon – he was the best son we could have imagined, the best brother his sisters could have asked for, and a true friend with a big heart and deep character.

Brandon lived a positive, joyful life that was filled with purpose; we’re so proud that he was known as a young man who encouraged others and selflessly cared for their needs. Most importantly, Brandon’s life centered around his relationship with Jesus Christ, who was the source of his gentle love for others.

We thank the community for the outpouring of support we’ve received, and we ask for privacy as we grieve this loss as a family.”
