A chilly and windy morning greeted the runners for the newly renamed Beware the Bear Trail Races. Revised courses, and renamed, from the 10-Spot, after last year’s floods, the runners this year ran the courses counter-clockwise.
In the 5km, Horsecow (Mark) Lonac, cruised to a 2min win in 19:44, wearing his cow print speedos, ahead of Ramses Olivas, 21:43, and Jason Searfoss, 21:56. Heather Crosby easily won the women’s race in 23:21, 4th overall, with Jennifer Perez nipping Leah Piper, for second and third, in 26:08 & 26:09.
The wind died down and the sun came back out for the 15km. After and opening 5:50 mile, Scott Spillman pulled away from a 4-man pack to win in 56:09, ahead of Jairo Tiscareno in 57:37. Horsecow doubled, taking 3rd in the 15km in 58:11. Horsecow won this race on the old 10-Spot course in 2010 and 2012. Top master Andy Ames was not far behind in 58:25. In the women’s race, Amanda Sullivan won in 1:10:35, with Jen Byrne taking second in 1:12:28, and Lindsay Loundagin third in 1:12:54.
