The starting gun for the 2012-13 season for the XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series will go off this weekend.

The XTERRA Marathon of Trail Races is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 6, at Cheyenne Mountain State Park in Colorado Springs, Colo., and runners of all ages and skill levels can participate.

The highlight of the event is a full-marathon course (26.2 miles) that will take the runners on approximately 3,000 feet of total climbing in the thin Colorado air. The course will hit a peak elevation of around 6,900 feet.

If that sounds a bit extreme, there will also be a half-marathon course (13.1 miles) on offer. Both the half-marathon and full-marathon courses will offer challenging uphill and downhill sections, with amazing views along the way.

For the less-experienced runners, a 5-kilometer course will also be offered.

Age-group awards will be presented for all three courses.

Online registration will be open through Wednesday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. (Mountain Time). Click HERE for registration information. Race-day registration will also be available at the race site starting at 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 6.

The Marathon of Trail Races will be the first of five races during the 2012-13 season for the XTERRA Colorado Trail Run Series. Other races will follow in the spring and summer of 2013.

Colorado is one of 12 regions that will host an XTERRA Trail Run Series during the 2012-13 season. The others are Alabama, Arizona, Southern California, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Pacific Northwest, Pocono, Puerto Rico, South Carolina and Texas.

At the end of the season, the age-group champions from each region will receive free entry to the 2013 XTERRA Trail Run National Championship.
