Friendship Knows No [State] Boundaries – 7th and 8th Marathons

One Day No ALS marathons #7 and #8 for Nevada Pokorney are conquered. Nevada ran the Eagle Creek Marathon on was August 4th with temperatures in the low to middle 90s with high humidity. She said the woods basically felt like a “sauna”, but luckily she had her YMX by Yellowman tank to keep her cool and dry, as Yellowman uses a MadKool material that wicks the moisture away from the skin and holds it in the outer layer. YMX by Yellowman is donating a portion of the sales of their running shirts to the One Day No ALS cause that Tracy and Nevada started in honor of their friend, Brian Day, who has ALS. The next marathon was Woodstock on September 8th with the perfect running weather, temperatures ranging from 50 to 60 degrees with beautiful blue skies for the entire race.

The two trail marathons could not have been more different temperature wise, but the thing that left the biggest impact for Nevada was the interest that was generated by other runner and by spectators alike for the cause and Brian Day’s story. Nevada had the opportunity to talk with a fellow runner named Bryan for 10 or 15 minutes at the Woodstock marathon. Bryan wasn’t familiar with ALS and didn’t know about any of the effects ALS has on the body. Nevada talked specifically about paralysis of all muscles, because, as runners, she knew it would be hard to imagine the impact of losing muscle function. Bryan’s reaction to learning about the loss of the ability to swallow and his shock at learning that there is currently no cure for ALS made a huge impression on Nevada.

Bryan, Nevada’s new running friend, quickly acknowledged what most of the people behind One Day No ALS already know…that Brian Day is an incredibly strong and inspiring person. Nevada and Tracy are so glad to be able to continuing bringing the tragedy of this disease to other people’s attention considering how few people know about ALS and its effects on the body.
