The GORE-TEX® TransRockies Run, one of the United States’ most storied trail races, concluded Sunday in Beaver Creek, Colo. after six days, 120 miles, and 20,000 feet of climbing. The race took runners through the Colorado Rockies, starting in Buena Vista and visiting historic Colorado sites like Leadville, Camp Hale, Red Cliff, and Vail. Legions of volunteers, the TransRockies race organization, and presenting sponsor, GORE-TEX®, provided over 300 runners with the experience of a lifetime. The GORE-TEX® TransRockies Run is often called “summer camp for adults” and the 2012 edition was no exception.

“The GORE-TEX® TransRockies Run is an adventure unlike any other running event in the country,” W.L. Gore & Associates’ Public Relations associate, Cynthia Amon, said. “We were heartened this year by the presence of some of our favorite veteran runners from races-past along with new teams and individuals who earned a place in our ‘Trail Striders’ family. And the participants loved the Gore Running Wear jackets.”

Runners from U.S. running hotbeds like Flagstaff, AZ and Bend, OR dominated this year’s podium, with Men’s Open division winners Mike Smith and Rob Krar (Flagstaff) taking every stage and the overall victory in 14 hours, 48 minutes. Bend’s Zach Violett and Stephanie Howe (The North Face Bendites) won the Open Mixed division, and Jeff and Katie Caba (Cabanators) won the 80+ Mixed division. Bend’s best ultrarunner, Max King, dominated RUN3, the GORE-TEX® TransRockies Run’s three day individual race.

Colorado’s best “home team” was Men’s 80+ division winners, Andy Ames (Boulder) and Bernie Boettcher (Silt).

A tight race ensued in the Women’s 80+ division with Valerie Lacarriere and Marielle Chabaud (France) of Team Resilience battling all week with Missy Berkel (Salt Lake City, Utah) and Sue Lee (Salt Lake City, Utah) of Team Titanium. Including the final stage, both teams each won three stages. Lacarriere and Chabaud would go on to win Stage 6 in 5:13:34 and take the division by 19 minutes and 31 seconds.

The ladies of Team Ooh la La Sportiva, Jenny Capel (Reno, Nevada) and Pam Smith (Salem, Oregon) took a clean sweep of the GORE-TEX® TransRockies Run’s Women’s Open division, winning all six stages.

“We are thrilled with the quality of this year’s fields, from the winners in each category to the runners who crossed the line hours later,” said TransRockies Race Director, Aaron McConnell. “The beauty of this race is how runners choose their own destiny; they can race competitively, enjoy the views along the way, or overcome a deeply personal objective. No matter the motivation, all of our runners leave every last detail to our crew and we strive to provide an amazing experience with memories that last a lifetime.”

Congratulations to all of the finishers of the 2012 GORE-TEX® TransRockies Run.
