Josiah Middaugh Of Vail Can’t Defend Home Course At XTERRA Event

Josiah Middaugh thought he’d have an edge over “The Caveman” this time around.

The XTERRA Mountain Championships — the last of four off-road triathlons in the American Tour — was held Saturday at Beaver Creek Resort. It is where Middaugh, a Vail resident, trains, and Conrad “The Caveman” Stoltz of South Africa was its guest.

Middaugh had finished second to Stoltz twice in the series before entering Saturday’s competition. He wanted to at least win on his home course, but Stoltz led throughout all three portions of the race and took the title.
