More than 800 runners and walkers converged in downtown Colorado Springs for the inaugural Super Half Marathon and 5K Family Fun Run/Walk last Sunday morning.  ”Super Bowl Sunday is kind of like a holiday, and people love running on holidays,” said Pikes Peak Road Runners board member Stephanie Meredith.  Both races were held on the Pikes Peak Greenway Trail, leading to some competitive times and even better views.

Super Half Marathon Results

In the men’s race, Scott Spillman, 25, of Colorado Springs, won in a time of 1:17:35.  It was his first 13.1-mile race since 2005: “I was looking to break 1:17.30 so I’m a little disappointed,” he said. “It was a great race.”  Second place finisher Cody Hill, 38, of Colorado Springs finished in 1:18.30.  “There are not that many races this time of year so this is a good race to have,” Hill said. “It’s a good way to knock the rust off.”  Gerald Romero crossed the line in third with a time of 1:22.33.

Women’s champ Olivia Long won the women’s half marathon in 1:30:14.  ”The course was pretty nice,” Long said. “It was nice to have the gravel, and a little softer course. The last one I did was in Atlanta. It was all asphalt and it was just brutal.”  Second place finisher and Pikes Peak Runners board member Stephanie Meredith came in close behind Long in 1:31:05.  Even closer was third place finisher Connilee Walter, crossing the line 1:31:31.

Super 5k Family Fun Run/Walk Results

First and second place in the men’s race were separated by a mere three-second difference.  First place finisher Kevin Morgan, 24, who runs for the Boulder Running Company, finished in 18:09, despite a head cold.  Runner-up Philip Meyer, 17, who competes for Cheyenne Mountain High School cross country, finished in 18:22.  Third-place finisher Rick Shoulberg, 50, of Guffey sprinted the final 200 yards to pull away from two others and finish in 19:23.

Longtime Colorado Springs local Nancy Hobbs grabbed the win in the women’s race in 22:38.  It was a family finish for second and third place finishers Nadine and Donna Garcia.  Nadine finished ten seconds faster and took second in 23:46, while Donna took third in 23:56.
