GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colorado — There were several noteworthy happenings at the 12th annual running of the Kenny Cline Memorial Sequoia Glen 5K.
Most notable was the record field of 119 runners and walkers, who turned out on a warm spring afternoon to get some exercise by getting to the top of a very big hill and back down again.
Some very fast people showed up to take the challenge of Sequoia Glen, which has earned the reputation as one of the toughest 5Ks in the area. Setting a new course record, and proving to be the fastest of the fast, was Jeremy Duncan.
Duncan’s 20 minute, 21 second gallop was good enough to defeat New Castle’s Josh Hejtmanek, who finished the race in 20:58. Third among the men, and seventh overall, was Glenwood’s Brian Passenti, who crossed the finish line in 22:41.
A very deep and talented field of ladies made their presence known at Sequoia Glen, with Ashley Arnold leading the way and finishing third overall with a time of 21:50. Following close behind, and coming off a 16th-place finish earlier in the day at the America’s Uphill in Aspen, was Glenwood’s Cynthia Arnold at 21:53.
Sequoia Glen was the first of six races in the Colorado River Valley Charity Race Series. Next up in the series will be the Grand River Gallop 5K Run/Walk in Rifle on Saturday, April 16.
